RedOctane was the first video game rental service on the Internet and its video game rental service now offers more than 2,500 different video game titles that work on PlayStation, PS2, Dreamcast, Xbox and GameCube platforms. Other great RedOctane features are its extensive collection of hard to find old, rare and imported video games that are not found anywhere else, as well as a collection of Anime DVDs for rent.

RedOctane offers its video game rental subscription for only $18.95 a month, which is lower than most other services and it entitles you to two rentals per month, but the site does not offer a free trial or a purchase option after rental. However, after the initial two rentals, subscribers can rent as many games as they want with no due dates or late fees, and this unlimited feature makes RedOctane an especially attractive rental site option for the active gamer.

Once rented, the video games are delivered straight to your door by first class U.S. mail with delivery times of 3-5 business days. All video games are sent with return mailers and postage included. You can also browse and search the site quite easily for interesting game titles and you can put games into a watch list for future rental.

Unfortunately, RedOctane has recently fallen behind some of the competing online video game rental sites in that its game descriptions are usually rather minimal and do not include a full manual.

The site only offers one rental plan, game availability is rather low despite the site´s large collection, there is no free trial or telephone support and their rental website is rather basic and in need of an upgrade.

RedOctane is based in Mountain View CA and was founded in 1999. Formerly known as WebGameZone, RedOctane was the first video game rental site on the Internet and it continues to be a leading game renter. Activision bought RedOctane for almost $100 million in June 2006, and is now a leading developer, publisher and distributor of entertainment software such as Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Dance Dance Revolution or DDR.

In recent years, RedOctane has shot right to the top of the gaming pyramid, with over $1 billion in sales for Guitar Hero alone. Accordingly, in addition to offering video game rentals, the RedOctane website also includes links to GuitarHero.com. Visit the GuitarHeroCommunity online forum and the RedOctane online store which lets a visitor buy all the Guitar Hero games and controllers.
